The Painters share single ‘Somewhere’

Montreal-based indie-rock band The Painters share “Somewhere,” the second single from their anticipated debut full-length album, which will arrive on October 20 via EEL RECORDS.

“Somewhere” sets off as a humble folk serenade – a song you’ve always known, like a place you recognize but can’t remember visiting. As it unfolds, you glimpse its unearthly form liquify and contort into new shapes. With songwriter Alex Bourque’s earnest refrain comes a gust of hi-fi brilliance; Michael Halls’ country pickin’ and drummer Alex Lavoie’s easygoing brushes are overtaken by vocoders from a future timeline. Gelatinous guitar riffs soar high above diatonic conventions. The song fades out to reveal a hidden track crafted by Josh Boguski – an ear-candy paradise where dewey synths, narcotic saxophones, and field recordings conjure mellow seaside reveries. Finally, the trance is broken by a wave of drum machines and slide guitars – an anthem that is both perplexing and satisfying.
